While medieval countries of Western and Southern Europe were built on ruins of Roman Empire, the Christian civilisation came to Poland only around AD966, with baptism of Poland, which is regarded as beginning of state of Poland. Therefore, court music had no time to form there as richly as elsewhere in Europe.

Remained Polish medieval songs are scarce, mostly sacred compositions. They had better chances of getting written down, and much better - of survival behind thick monasterial walls in those uneasy times.

• Bogurodzica ^[#] Mother of God: This single-voice hymn is the oldest known song written in Polish, and originates probably from 13th century. Used to be a war song of Polish knights.
• Breve regnum Short Reign; original name: Cantilena de regno scholarium Cracoviensum: An interesting secular song, used by students of Jagiellonian University in Kraków. It describes, as far as I know, the annual seven-days feast (Students' Games).

• Omnia beneficia This is the oldest multi-voiced piece found in Poland, circa 1300.
